# Deleting your account

> Immediate, with no grace period — and it tells you exactly what happens to each workspace before you confirm.

At the bottom of **settings**, under **Delete account**. The line on the button
is **Delete this account and any workspace only you are in**. It is immediate,
and it is not reversible.

## It is not one delete

Everything hangs off a workspace rather than off you, so "delete my account" has
a different answer per workspace. The dialog **names them** rather than counting
them, before you confirm:

| | What happens |
| --- | --- |
| A workspace nobody else is active in | deleted with you |
| A workspace you share with other people | you leave it — it is theirs, and so is everything made in it |
| A workspace you are the only admin of | **refused**: hand it over or empty it first |

That last one is the rule that also stops the last admin demoting themselves —
see [inviting people](https://beafk.app/docs/inviting-people.md).

## Two steps, on purpose

You type **the email address on the account**, not the word "delete". The
address is also a check that this is the account you think it is, which matters
if you have two.

If you have [two-factor](https://beafk.app/docs/two-factor.md) on, six digits are asked for as well.
In an application with no password of its own, that is the only step-up there
is: without it, a stolen cookie would be enough to do this.

## What is deleted

Your user and your memberships, at the identity service and here, along with
your sessions. The email becomes free to sign up with again.

## The subscription is stopped first

Before anything else happens, every subscription belonging to a workspace that
is going with you is cancelled at the payment processor — including a checkout
you started and never paid, because its payment link would otherwise go on
working. Only then is anything deleted.

If the processor cannot be reached, **nothing is deleted at all** and the screen
says so. Otherwise you would be left with an account that is gone and a card
that is still being charged, which only we can put right; waiting a minute costs
nothing. The period you have already paid for is not refunded — see
[the terms](https://beafk.app/terms).

## What is not

- **Invitations you sent** belong to the workspace they were sent into.
- **The closing entry for a workspace that went with you.** Its name, what was
billed for it, which machines were on it by fingerprint, how many
certificates were issued to whom, and the address that spent the free trial —
written the moment before everything else about it is deleted. Accounting and
tax rules require the billing half; the rest is what answers a claim that
arrives years later, and what stops the seven days starting again. It holds no
code, no chats, no addresses of machines and no way into anything, and
it is deleted by itself after seven years. It is on the
[privacy page](https://beafk.app/privacy) too, under how long we keep things.
- **Your free trial.** Closing the account does not give it back — see
  [what it costs](https://beafk.app/docs/what-it-costs.md).
- **Database backups** hold what they hold until they roll off on their own
  schedule.
- **The identity service** keeps its own audit trail on its own schedule.
- **Your machines and everything on them.** They are your servers. Deleting your
account here does not touch them — run `sudo beafk cloud forget` on each one
if you want it to stop answering to a cabinet.

## No grace period

There is no soft delete and no seven-day window. The delete happens when you
confirm it.

## Before you go

If it is the bill you want to stop rather than the account, **cancel the
subscription** on the billing screen — a different thing from disconnecting
machines. See [changing your plan](https://beafk.app/docs/changing-your-plan.md).
